The Troglodytic Intelligentsia
You know, many of us like to pretend this type of stuff doesn't exist, but it still does:
"Did I mention this man hates me? You and me? Yes he does. Why? Because he can. Yes He Can. Beneath that cool persona is a megalomaniac. Cool? Like Stalin after a purge, emotionally and sexually spent. Like Saddam after a torture session, dozing in his chair with someone's genitals curled in his fist. Like Pol Pot after a petit mal seizure, mumbling a litany of the dead. Cool that way," - Velociworld.
Pretty disturbing, huh? Can you guess who he is talking about? Yup, "That one." The rest of the article is equally disturbing with it's invocation of Flannery O'Connor's Francis Tarwater and attempts at parralleling The Violent Bear It Away with our current political race. Or, more specifically, with a certain politician in that race.
I came across this by way of Sullivan, who nominated this for his Hewitt Award. He, in turn, came upon it via James Wolcott. I will stop with the chain there because I don't like shilling blogs that shill hate and going further might just do that.
Still, it is important to click through and read the above entry in full. It is important that you understand this type of thought is still out there. It is important to understand that just because people who think like this may be troglodytic, it does not mean that they lack intelligence. Indeed, we are speaking of the troglodytic intelligentsia here. It would behoove us to not underestimate their power and to act accordingly.
I will say that I was quite happy to see the sea of counter comments in the post after Andrew did his Hewitt post. Most of them express some type of sympathy for the condition of the writer and the "pro" commentors. While this is commendable, I think it should also be pointed out that this type of thinking is not overcome by simply "praying" for people or "hoping that they seek help". This type of thinking can, much more easily than we care to admit, come to power again. We must remain vigilant and make sure that this type of thinking is always forcefully condemned and never again allowed to be "socially acceptable".

It's got electoral votes. It's what politicians crave.
